Our patient Nalu passed this plastic bag after it went all through her digestive tract.
Plastic litter ends up in marine wildlife when people throw it in the ocean. But even if you live kilometers from the coast, the plastic that you litter is carried by rainwater and wind into creeks, rivers, and drains – which all lead to the ocean. 80% of plastic in the ocean originates on land.
Sea turtles are inquisitive and explore with their mouth. Ingested plastic doesn’t only disrupt their digestive system which can lead to death, the toxic chemicals leaching from the plastic can cause serious health issues. Please DO NOT LITTER and help protect sea turtles, but also other marine wildlife like dolphins, whales, fish and seabirds.
Nalu is 28% underweight, very weak, anaemic, and her x-rays show gas in her gastro-intestinal tract as a result of the plastic ingestion. She feed inconsistently and is passing scar tissue. For now she is responding to her treatment and we’re keeping all flippers crossed that she will pull through. We will continue to provide our 24/7 specialised care and of course lots of TLC.
